Soldier drowns in Essequibo

The Guyana Defence Force is probing the death of a young soldier who drowned in the Essequibo river early Sunday Morning while reportedly taking a river bath.

The lifeless body of Corporal Kevin Calder was pulled from the deep brown waters of the river hours after he was last seen taking a swim. The incident took place at Makouria in the Essequibo where the GDF has a training school. The 28-year-old soldier was transferred to that unit recently. He was previously based at the army’s Camp Stephenson at Timehri.

Reports suggest he encountered some difficulties while swimming and went under the water.  A search was launched and his body was eventually found a few hours later. He served as a Medex in the GDF. Kevin Calder has left to mourn his wife and a young child.
