A fraudster, who for months contacted persons via email and telephone, pretending to be the First Lady of Guyana, was today remanded to prison on several fraud and false pretense charges.
The man, Muhammad Ali, appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly and was charged for fraudulently obtaining money, under false pretense, while presenting himself as First Lady, Sandra Granger.
It was alleged that on the 23rd April, he obtained 12 pennyweight of gold, worth $139,000 and then on the 22nd April, he obtained $30,000 worth in GT&T and Digicel Phone Cards, while pretending that he was in the position to grant scholarships to a young woman.
It was further alleged that between the 1st and 30th April at Potaro River, he obtained $30,000 from Bhagwati Singh, while pretending on the phone that he was the First Lady and was in a position to grant the woman a scholarship to study overseas.
Ali denied all of the allegations made against him, but admitted that he did convince some persons to send money to his phone.
He told the Court that he wants to meet with the real First Lady since he expects he might be sent to jail for a long time.
The case has been transferred to the Chief Magistrate.
