17-year-old girl arrested in Berbice hit and run fatal accident probe

Police in Berbice have confirmed the arrest of a 17-year-old girl in connection with Sunday night’s hit and run accident, which claimed the life of 29-year-old labourer, Deonarine Boodram.

The accident took place in the Corentyne, Berbice area.

The teenager was reportedly driving the vehicle at a fast rate along the public road, when she lost control and slammed into the man, who was walking at the side of the roadway.

The impact pitched the man’s body into a bus shed, before it hit the ground, and the sport utility vehicle ended up in a nearby trench, a Police statement explained.

The Police said the teenage driver fled the scene of the accident, and it was other persons in the area who took the man to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The young lady was reportedly identified after investigators questioned the owner of the vehicle about who was driving it at the time of the accident.

She was arrested on Monday and informed of the likely charges that she will be facing.
