Fire guts Kaieteur News and Bhena’s Footwear Eccles warehouse

An Eccles Industrial site storage bond owned by Kaieteur News and Bhena’s Footwear went up in flames on Tuesday evening, completely gutting the bond and destroying all of its contents.

The Guyana Fire Service was summoned to the facility just after 5pm. The fire quickly spread out of control as it moved through the bond that was packed with stock for the Bhena’s Footwear store and Kaieteur News.

Most of the items in the bond were combustible and aided the fire as the firemen battled the blaze.

It took the firemen more than three hours to contain the blaze to the one facility as it threatened nearby buildings in the industrial site, which houses several manufacturing companies.

The fire has left the owners counting hudreds of millions of dollars in damages, but promising to back on their feet soon. A transmission tower belonging to Kaieteur Radio which is housed in the compound of the warehouse, was affected by the blaze, throwing the radio station off air.

The owner of the bond, Glenn Lall, said the facility was a warehouse for both his Kaieteur News business and his wife’s Bhena’s store. Most of the items in the warehouse belonged to Bhenas and some other businesses that stored items there.

The Guyana Fire Service is continuing its investigations.
