The main suspect in the terror attack at the Mobil Gas Station on Regent Street arrived in Guyana illegally by boat hours before he planted an explosive device at the gas station which claimed the life of a six-year-old girl when it was detonated, according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum.
At an evening press conference, the Crime Chief said the investigations are still active, but he said the suspect, who was arrested earlier today in the Region 3 village of Vergenoegen, has confessed to the crime and was also positively identified by one of his accomplices.
The Crime Chief said there are nine persons currently in custody connected to the incident. He told reporters that the main suspect is a member of a violent Venezuelan gang.
“Among other things that he mentioned to us was that the device, he brought it in from Venezuela to Guyana. He also indicated that the device had a switch which he activated when he went into the vehicle which was parked within the vicinity of the gas station, and I will leave it at that”, Mr. Blanhum said.
The Crime Chief said the investigation is at a very critical stage and is not closed.
He said the main suspect has been cooperating with the investigations. On the issue of motive, the Crime Chief said he could not offer any comment on that, as the probe remains active. But, he said there is no doubt that the Force has the right man in custody.

“The issue of identification does not exist. The prime suspect was positively identified by one of his accomplices. Moreso, the suspect as I mentioned before, confessed his involvement in this particular crime. There is no issue about identification any longer”, Blanhum told reporters.
He said he would not say at this time whether Sunday’s attack was linked to the two previous explosive attack earlier this year at the East Ruimveldt Police outpost and a GPL site.

Meanwhile, the Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond said the Government’s Smart City camera surveillance system was key in assisting law enforcement with its efforts to track down the suspect. She said an investigation that might have previously be ongoing for months got a breakthrough within days.
The Minister also indicated that the Police will be pursuing terrorism charges in the matter and the death penalty will be sought.
