37-year-old businessman from Bladen Hall, East Coast Demerara, Amar Persaud, was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 this morning after being charged with being in possession of illegal and unlicensed weapons.
Persaud was arrested by the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit and handed over to the Police last weekend after he was nabbed on Sheriff Street in Georgetown with an illegal and unlicensed AK-47 high powered weapon and an unlicensed Tarrus pistol.
The man produced a license for a third weapon that was found in his possession.
He was arrested by CANU in a vehicle, and investigators suspect that he was attempting to sell the illegal firearms.
Persaud appeared in Court before Magistrate Faith McGusty, where the possession of illegal firearm charges were read to him. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of $500,000, and will make his next Court appearance on the 21st January, 2026.
