Coast Guard Officer remanded in marijuana and illegal gun bust; Alleged accomplice granted bail

Following his arrest, the Guyana Defence Force announced that he has been interdicted from duty. The GDF is carrying out its own probe. The Coast Guard Officer should have been at his post in Berbice and not in Georgetown on the day of the incident.

Coast Guard Officer remanded in marijuana and illegal gun bust; Alleged accomplice granted bail

The 30-year-old Coast Guard Officer who was held by the Police with over 11 pounds of marijuana along with an illegal gun and ammunition was charged and remanded to prison today.

Interdicted Coast Guard Lieutenant Dominic Gilpin pleaded not guilty as he appeared in Court this afternoon before Magistrate Faith McGusty.

He denied the allegation that on the 30th of September he had in his possession 11 pounds of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. He also denied being in possession of the illegal gun and ammunition. The Magistrate ordered that he be remanded to prison.

Gilpin was the driver of the motor car when it was stopped and searched by the Police.

Another man, 30-year-old Paul Murray who was in the car with the Coast Guard Officer was also charged today. However, he was only charged with being in possession of the marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

The Magistrate granted him bail in the sum of $250,000.

Both men will return to Court later this month for the matter to continue.
