The Guyana Police Force today seized a number of licensed guns and ammunition from the Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed.

The Guyanese billionaires, who remain under US sanction and are currently fighting an Extradition Request from the US in the Courts, said the seizure of their personal weapons and ammunition came as a surprise, as the Senior Mohamed just days ago had two of his firearm licenses renewed.

Today’s seizure took place at the family’s Houston residence.

A total of five weapons were seized.

A .32 revolver and a shotgun belonging to Nazar Mohamed were among the weapons seized, although he was issued with renewed licenses for the weapons last week.

The other weapons seized were 5.56mm rifle, a glock 45 caliber pistol, and a 12-gauge shotgun belonging to Azruddin Mohamed.

His licenses were issued on March 28, 2025, and expired on December 31, 2025.

An undisclosed amount of ammunition was also seized.

In conducting the seizure, Police Inspector L. Blair McGregor informed the Mohameds that the exercise was being conducted on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner of Police and Region 4 A Commander, Simon McBean.

In a letter from the Deputy Commissioner, addressed to Azruddin Mohamed, the Guyana Police Force acknowledged that Mohamed was a licensed holder for the three weapons, but said due to the US sanctions and the serious allegations leveled against them, they must now show cause.

The US sanctions against the Mohameds were instituted almost two years ago.

“The U.S Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), in collaboration with Guyanese Law Enforcement, has conducted an investigation into your business network operating within and outside of Guyana. Consequently, you have been indicted in the United States District Court, Southern District of Florida for conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. In light of these serious allegations, you are hereby required to show cause, in writing, why your firearms licenses should not be revoked in accordance with Section 18 (8) (a) of the Firearms Act,” a section of the letter, which was present by the Inspection, stated.

A similar letter was issued to the Senior Mohamed. In the interim, the father and son were ordered to immediately surrender their weapons and ammunition along with their licenses.

In response, the Opposition Leader questioned the motive behind the seizure of the weapons, pointing out that the move comes almost two years after he and his father were sanctioned by the US.

“We were sanctioned since the 11^th June, 2024, that’s when we were sanctioned. We had our firearms, our security firearms up until March of 2025. The President himself told my father, after we were sanctioned, that the sanction has to do with the United States of America, we are Guyanese. It is my democratic right to protect myself, to protect my family, to protect my businesses,” the Opposition Leader said.

According to Azruddin Mohamed, when a total of 70 firearms belonging to their security firm – Mohamed’s Enterprise Security were seized in March 2025, they were informed that their ability to carry their personal weapons would not be affected.

He said as the Leader of the Opposition, who traverses the country, he should be allowed to carry his personal weapon.

“Every day I have special branch following me, I am scared for my life,” the Opposition Leader said. But no amount of pleadings stopped the police from seizing the weapons.

The Police Inspector reminded the father and son that they have the opportunity to show cause why their licenses should not be revoked.

“We never had a single breach, a single breach, in 20 years, a single breach, never ever,” a disappointed Nazar Mohamed said, while his son added that the seizure was “uncalled for.”

The Guyana Police Force has not released an official statement on the seizure.
