Mother of three pleads for help after fire guts Sophia home

A 33-year-old single parent mother of three is pleading for help after her two-bedroom Sophia home was destroyed during an early morning blaze on Thursday.

Postal worker, Yolanda Gilgeous-Sampson, said the fire left her with nothing but the clothes on her back, and two gas bottles that she was able to save.

With three young children ages 8, 12 and 14, Gilgeous-Sampson is anxious to rebuild but needs help to do so.

“I need help, a lot, a lot, a lot of help I need. I need a home, and I need to get myself back. My children need to be comfortable. I need help,” the mother of three said.

Gilgeous-Sampson said at the time of the fire, her home was fully furnished. Her losses also include her children’s school materials including their uniforms and computers, as well as an electric bike. The electric bike was used by the young mother for work her job as a post-girl.

She explained that the fire started at around 9am on Thursday in one of the bedrooms of her South Sophia home. At the time, she was sitting on her front veranda. Her children were already at school.

“I was sitting right on the landing when my neighbour said smoke was coming from that one side there. So, when I turn and I run in, I see the whole one side room already in flame. So, all I could have save was my two gas bottles and that was it. When I was heading in back to see what more I can save, the fire was too much,” Gilgeous-Sampson explained.

The Fire Service responded to the fire within minutes, but was not able to save the wooden house. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently being conducted by the Fire Service but Gilgeous-Sampson suspects that it was electrical in nature.

Persons serious of helping the young mother rebuild can contact her on 630-6742.
