Police investigators have launched a probe into the death of a 23-year-old Sophia man, who was found lying in a pool of blood in his yard, with a gunshot wound to the head.
The young man, whose remains were discovered at his ‘C’ Field Reserve Dam, Sophia residence on Thursday, has been identified as Kurt Beckles.
The discovery was made around 8:15 in the morning.
In a statement, the police said preliminary investigations have revealed that Beckles lived alone. When crime scene investigators arrived at the scene, the man was found lying motionlessly in his yard with blood around his head. The police said it appears as though he was shot to the right side of the head.
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) were summoned to the scene, and the young labourer was examined and pronounced dead by doctor.
When reporters arrived at the scene, his mother, Donella Eastman was in disbelief. It was the second death for the family in less than a month.
Eastman said she received a phone call with the devastating news on Thursday morning, and together with her daughter and nephew, she made her way to the scene, only to confirm her worst fear.
“When I came with the police, I saw my son lie down in the bush. The bush flatten like two persons were fighting and blood to the side of his head,” the woman said.
Eastman said her son was a quiet individual, who was not known for being a trouble maker. The grieving mother said she is at a loss as to who would want to kill her son.
“I wouldn’t know why somebody would want to do Kurt that because Kurt is not somebody that does trouble people or would do people or trouble people on purpose. If you trouble him, then he probably would fight or argue with you. I wouldn’t know to which extent Kur would have offended somebody for them to end his life like that,” she said.
The man’s death has devastated the family, with the mother explaining that less than a month ago, their family lost another young member, who was just around the same age as her son.
Meanwhile, police investigators are reviewing the CCTV footage from within the area as part of the ongoing investigation.
