The Guyana Police Force has seized a number of weapons belonging to a security company after the weapons were all found to be unlicensed.
While the Police Force did not name the security company, it reported that ranks conducted an operation on Tuesday at a number of locations where guards attached to the security company were on duty with the unlicensed weapons and seized the weapons.
The Police visited locations in Sophia and Lusignan at businesses where the security guards attached to the company were on duty.
The Police said at a supermarket in Sophia, the security guard was found in possession of an Airsoft rifle and was unable to produce a permit. At another business place in Sophia, another guard attached to the same company was found in possession of a 12-gauge shotgun with two live cartridges, but was unable to produce a license or precept to carry the weapon. Additionally, the weapon’s serial number had been filed off.
In Lusignan at another business place, the Police said the security guard was found in possession of an airsoft rifle, but made it clear to investigators that he was presented with the weapon at the start of his shift by the security company.
The 40-year-old owner of the security company, who lives in Industry on the East Coast Demerara, was contacted and he was found in possession of five Airsoft firearms, including pistols and rifles. He was unable to produce any permits or licenses for the firearms and was taken into custody along with his workers.
In total, eight firearms were recovered, along with two rounds of ammunition.
The police said all firearms and ammunition were processed and lodged pending further investigation.
