Millions of dollars went up in flames this afternoon as a fire ripped through the storage bond of the 401 Furniture Store in Mon Repos on the East Coast Demerara.
The early afternoon blaze completely destroyed the two-storey facility, which was packed with furniture, mattresses and household appliances.
The Fire Service responded with two fire tenders, and while the firemen went into quick action, their best efforts were pushed back by the fire as it was aided by the wind.
Many residents, including those who work at the furniture store watched on in shock.
Owner of 401 Furniture, Nazim Khan, told reporters that earlier in the day workers attempted to smoke out a section of the bond after discovering bees. He said that smoking out decision might have ignited a blaze that quickly spread.
“The bees, and they think they were going to smoke the bees out but they ain’t realize, the place does get foam but I can’t blame the guys them for that, honestly because it is not them fault,” Khan told reporters.

The owner’s daughter, Saudia Khan, said the family is awaiting an official report from the Guyana Fire Service on the fire. She explained that the bond was in operation since 2019.
“We don’t have factual information about what really happen. Some guys were hired to clear the front of the building…and as they were clearing the land they saw the bee hive, and they light a fire and they tried to smoke it out but they didn’t relate any information to us that, that is what they were going to do,” she said.
The Guyana Fire Service is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire, and an official report is pending.
