President Irfaan Ali has recommitted to raising the Income Tax Threshold to $200,000 before his term in office comes to end. The President was re-elected to a five year term in office last September.
According to the President, with the foundation laid by successive People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Governments, his Administration will continue to foster the growth and the development of the working class.
“The new base is the new threshold, and we said before the end of this term that new base would be $200,000, upon which our workers would stand – $200,000 tax-free,” the President said.
The President was at the time delivering an address at a commemorative ceremony held in observance of the 78th Anniversary of the Enmore Martyrs on Tuesday.
Earlier this year, the Ali Administration raised the income tax threshold from $130,000 to $140,000 – a move that saw the removal of approximately 5,000 people from the tax net.
The Opposition has been pressing for a more significant increase in the income tax threshold.
But Ali the President said his Government has brought real change to the people of the country, as he boasted about increase in access to housing, education, and healthcare by workers of the country.
“The new base is that every single child of the worker can now have a degree, a master, or a PHD free of cost. The new base is that you will be able to get all the services for cancer right here in this country because our government will invest in it. The new base is that we give you free cardiology services, free diabetic services, free surgery, free maternal service, free healthcare at every level, that is the new base upon which we stand,” the President said.
In paying tribute to the five sugar workers – Lallabagee, Rambarran, Pooran, Surujballi and Harry – who were killed on June 16 1948 during a strike, the President said his Government will continue to do right by workers by maintaining the rights and dignity of all workers.
