This year’s most outstanding performer in Guyana at the Caribbean Secondary Education Examination is Nitya Narine of the Tagore High School in Berbice. She secured 26 Grade One passes and 1 Grade two at the regional examinations.
Narine is among 78 students who secured 12 or more Grade Ones at CSEC, with a total number of 264 students from across the country gaining eight or more Grade One passes.
For Narine, her stellar performance at this year’s exams comes as no surprise.
“First and foremost, before I begin, I want to thank God because throughout my life God has been blessing me with learning abilities, talents and opportunities but honestly, it wasn’t that surprising because I have been achieving many accomplishments over the few years. For example, in 2021, I sat the NGSA in Grade Five and I passed to go to the Bishops High School and also, another achievement I won the inaugural Guyana Learning Channel Spelling Bee and in school, art competitions I am always excelling. So, yes, I got what I expected, and I am very happy,” Narine told reporters.
The Tagore High School student plans to pursue law studies at the University of Guyana with a legal career planned for her future.
The other outstanding CSEC students at this year’s examinations include Anushka Singh of Queen’s College, who secured 25 Grade Ones and 1 Grade Two; Shreya Ramnarine of Anna Regina Secondary, who achieved 22 Grade Ones, 6 Grade Twos and 1 Grade Three; Joseph Daniel of the Bishops’ High with 21 Grade Ones; and Feiaz Dhanny of Saraswati Vidya Niketan, who secured 20 Grade Ones and 1 Grade Two.
At the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency level, David Sugrim of Queens College secured the top position with 11 Grade Ones and 7 Grade twos.
For Sugrim, who is no stranger to success having excelled at both CSEC and CAPE in the past, his long hours of studying have paid off. An aspiring neurosurgeon, Sugrim said he intends to begin studies in the medical field.

“I feel very accomplished and I am excited to take my next step from CAPE. My next step is to study medicine,” Sugrim told reporters.
Sugrim is among the twelve students, who gained six or more Grade Ones at CAPE.
Minister of Education, Sonia Parag said the country has recorded improvements in the overall pass rates at both CSEC and CAPE. She said the success recorded at both exams is reflective of the investments made in the Education Sector, and the interventions made in subject areas such as Mathematics.
“I am particularly pleased with the improvements we have seen this year in both Mathematics and Additional Mathematics because they tell us that the interventions we have been making are beginning to bear fruit. Our Mathematics tents, the strengthening of our teachers’ training, our online reinforcement classes and the other targeted support we have introduced are all part of a deliberate effort to improve performance,” Minister Parag said.
The Chief Education Officer, Saddam Hussain explained that the country recorded improvements in 23 subject areas including Mathematics from a total of 35 subjects.
“Additional Maths 5%, Agricultural Science, both awards, single and double, Chemistry 3.2%, English, Family and Resource Management 3%, Food Nutrition and Health 3%; French, we have improved by 16.6%. Geography 11.2%, Industry Technology Building 2.5% [and] Mechanical Engineering 2%,” the CEO disclosed.

He said the country also recorded an increase in the Mathematics pass rate by 2.5%. However, the CEO said the country saw declines in 12 subjects with Portuguese and Textile, Clothing and Fashion declining by more than 5%.
Meanwhile, at the CAPE level, the Chief Education Officer reported that the country achieved a pass rate of 94.6%, which represents an increase.
The Diamond Secondary School wrote CAPE for the very first time gaining a pass rate of 96.8%.
