Additional power added to national grid, surpassing current demand -says Minister Indar

Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, has reported that additional power has been added to the country’s grid, surpassing the power needed during the peak demand periods.

The announcement comes as power outages in a number of communities have been blamed on increased demand.

According to Minister Indar, the peak demand period now requires about 240 megawatts of power, while the national grid now has in excess of 266 megawatts of available power.

“So we have now moved from 256 to 266 megawatts that puts us with a reserve on the grid about 26 megawatts, because the peak right now is around 240 megawatts, and the reason for that is one of the things we said we will start doing as a Government is start taking off lights, AC’s from government buildings and so on so that has already started and we are seeing reduction in the demand,” the Minister noted.

Despite reaching this stage, the Minister said the Government will still be seeking additional power to put on the grid.

“There is an extra 5 megawatts that will come by the end of August from the steam operation on the power ship, they will be ready to deliver that extra 5 megawatts into the grid. Currently, there are already putting 70 megawatts, is only five more megawatts from that power ship that will come into the grid,” Minister Indar said.

On the East Bank Demerara from Garden Eden to Timehri and to the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, the only transmission line in the area has reached its limit, and the peak causing a trip in the system.

Additional work is to be done to address that issue.

“We will be building that transmission line in phases in Garden of Eden, we build we will drop off the power, so it will be phased approach to that transmission line which goes to Timehri, and then it cuts of at the Linden/ Soesdyke highway and then it goes up all the way, so work has started in that transmission line,” the Minister noted.

The Minister also provided an update on what is being done in other Regions that are hit by power generation issues

In Region 10, the BOSAI company will a provide 3 additional megawatts of power to the grid in Linden. While In Region Two, the procurement process for an additional 8 MW of generation capacity is currently in its final stage.

In Region Three, works for the laying of an additional cable are scheduled to commence on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

The cable will run along the riverbed of the Demerara River from the Princess Street Substation to the Vreed-en-Hoop Substation and will facilitate the transmission of 7 MW of power.
