A 76-year-old bottle supply contractor was crushed to death by a truck at the Banks DIH headquarters at Thirst Park on Thursday, becoming the latest work place tragedy.

The dead man has been identified as Gobin Persaud, who was a resident of Triumph on the East Coast of Demerara.

Persaud was reportedly making a delivery at the company on Thursday afternoon when he was hit down and crushed by a reversing truck.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force reported that an alarm was raised just after the man was hit down and the truck came to a stop. Emergency Medical Technicians were immediately summoned, but Persaud was pronounced dead by a doctor at the scene.

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old truck driver, who is from Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was taken into custody as the police continue their investigations into the deadly accident.

At the scene, Persaud’s son-in-law told reporters that they were at the company to sell bottles when the incident occurred.

“I come with the truck, the canter here with bottles to sell to banks. So, he would normally go in Banks and make the arrangements for me to drive in. Now, I am in the canter about half hour, I ain’t see he coming, then somebody come and tell me that the man dead. And so, when I go in, I see the man under Banks truck,” the man explained.

The man said his father-in-law had been selling recycled bottles to Banks DIH for almost 50 years and was a hardworking individual.

This is the third deadly work-related accident to have occurred in the past two weeks, with the Ministry of Labour remaining silent on many of the incidents.
