Two United States companies are setting the foundation to build 10,000 “affordable homes” in Guyana, with financing through US Export-Import Bank (EXIM), US Ambassador Nicole Theriot has said.
During an appearance on the Guyana Energy Perspectives podcast, the Ambassador said the two companies have responded to a call by President Irfaan Ali to bring more US small and medium sized companies to Guyana.
“The US Export-Import Bank is going to be providing funding for affordable housing in Guyana for construction and we have two US companies, who are working together one from Louisiana—U. S frame factory and the other from Indiana Golden-Shields. Golden Shields has never operated outside of the United States before but it headed the call and it heard what the President was saying and they are going to be constructing together 10,000 homes here in Guyana,” the Ambassador noted.
The Ambassador said the move will benefit Guyanese and open up opportunities for more persons to own their own homes.
“They are going to be constructing homes not just for the elites but that the average Guyanese person can purchase and I think that is such a wonderful thing that the government is thinking about and providing financing for companies to come in and provide housing for everyone not just the rich,” the Ambassador stated.
It is unclear when the project will get underway.
The announcement by the Ambassador comes as the government also recently announced plans to build 40,000 houses as part of a wider housing push. The Ministry of Housing has a number of housing plans that it intends to roll out in the coming months.
