Duravilla launches pre-fab homes targeting local and regional markets

DuraVilla Homes Guyana has launched its 1000+ Modular Homes Initiative with the intention of constructing hundreds of affordable prefabricated houses for both the local and regional housing markets.

DuraVilla Guyana Inc. forms part of a fully integrated group of timber companies from Guyana which include logging, saw milling, and manufacturing companies.

The eco-friendly houses are made from greenheart wood, which is one of the most durable types of wood on the local market.

In his address at the launching on Wednesday, President Irfaan Ali said with the country’s Housing Sector now booming, it is well on its way to providing housing solutions to countries in Latin America and the Caribbean through the exportation of prefabricated houses.

It is estimated that approximately US$310 Billion is required to fill the housing deficit in Latin America and the Caribbean, and Guyana. According to President Ali, Guyana needs to better position itself to tap into the regional housing sector.

“There are, therefore, opportunities for Guyana to capitalise on this demand for decent housing. But to do so, Guyana must be able to develop competitive housing solutions, and that is what you’re working on. Competitive quality housing solution. The construction of prefabricated housing is, therefore, an emerging market, one which Guyana can and must tap into, in order to boost local manufacturing, and the spin-off effects are enormous,” President Ali said as he addressed those present at DuraVilla’s Land of Canaan location.

Already DuraVilla has signed an agreement with National Housing Corporation (NHC) for the construction and delivery of 100 prefabricated houses to Barbados.

In applauding the company for providing housing solutions to not only Guyana but also to the Caribbean, President Ali said the houses are of superior quality.

“Not only is this product a timber home, this product is a timber home that meets all the international requirement that Barbados needs for hurricane proof and earthquake, and everything engineered locally,” the President pointed out.

St. Vincent is also set to purchase a number of the prefab homes from Guyana.

Head of DuraVilla Homes, Rafeek Khan said his company intends to raise the bar for the housing sector with the production of high-quality timber homes.

He explained that so far it has been a challenging journey filled with many obstacles but his company is up to the task of taking on new challenges.

“Today, we are launching this project for 100+ homes, guess what is going to happen? We closed the year, last year, with $34.5M of export, and I would like to make a bold statement here, that with the support, not just from our staff and employees and the government of Guyana but the support from small loggers, from the operators across the country, we will and we could double Guyana’s export by the time we close this year by $60M,” Mr Khan said.

The Duravilla company is hoping that home builders locally and those in the Caribbean will see the quality of its work and sign on to make purchases.
