The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) and a group of sugar workers from four estates picketed the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) on Monday over the company failing to remit outstanding savings deducted from the wages of sugar workers for the GAWU Cooperative Credit Union.
In a statement, GAWU said GuySuCo has been deducting Credit Union savings from the weekly wages of workers since March 2026, but has failed to transfer the funds to the Credit Union.
The union noted that the money belongs to the workers and represents savings they set aside from their hard-earned wages to secure their families’ futures.
According to GAWU, despite repeated commitments from GuySuCo’s management to settle the outstanding amounts, the corporation has failed to honour its promises.
The union pointed specifically to a written commitment made on August 27, 2026, under which GuySuCo promised to pay 50 per cent of the outstanding sum.
“The impact of this non-payment is devastating. Workers are being denied access to their own money needed for crucial expenses, such as school fees, medical bills, and basic household needs. Furthermore, the GAWU Cooperative Credit Union is facing a severe liquidity crisis due to withheld funds, which threatens its ability to provide essential financial support to thousands of workers and their families,” GAWU said.
GAWU maintains that the continued withholding of the money is unacceptable, given the financial difficulties it is creating for workers and the potential consequences for the Credit Union’s operations.
