File on murder of 6-year-old Berbice boy submitted to DPP for advice

Police investigators have submitted the file on the murder of 6-year-old, Orlando Jaikarran, to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice. The DPP’s office is likely to respond by early Friday.

The partly decomposed and decapitated body of the boy was found early on Tuesday morning during a search operation at a sea dam in Bath Settlement, Berbice.

The boy was reported missing by his father six days prior. The same father, Bharrat Jaikarran, is the prime suspect in the murder and remains in Police custody. A second man, suspected to be a religious leader from the same community was also taken into custody for questioning earlier this week.

The father had initially claimed that he was unaware of the child’s whereabouts and had last seen him when he put him to bed on the 13th October.

He reported the boy missing on the morning of the 14th October and initially assisted in the search operations.

However, this past weekend, security video recordings from a house in the same area where the man lives, revealed footage of the man walking from his home holding a child late on the night on October 13, and returning to his home without the child.

Police investigators arrested the father and confronted him with the new evidence, resulting in him providing information about where the child’s body was dumped.

When the body was discovered, the head was missing along with one of the arms and a part of a leg. The police said there were also chop wounds to the body.

The young boy and the man’s two other children lived with him. The man and his wife reportedly separated sometime back and he took custody of their three children, raising them with the ex-wife providing monthly financial support.

The woman said she was abused during their relationship, and that forced her to leave.

She said after the ex-husband dragged her before the Court for custody of the three children, she opted to have him take custody, while she continued to support them financially.
