Police investigators are probing the gruesome murder of 85- year old West Berbice resident Sumintra Sawh who was found stabbed to death in her home early this mornng.
In a statement, the Police Force said the investigations have revealed that the elderly woman who lived alone in her two-storey wooden and concrete house, was cared for by her great niece Roshanie Basdeo.
The great niece told police investigators that she visited her aunt’s home yesterday and the woman retired to bed at around around 7pm while she stayed over.
The caregiver claimed that she was awakened this morning by a man in her room, who demanded money while holding a knife at her throat.
Police investigators were told that the caregiver was taken to her aunt’s room, where she saw another man with the elderly woman.
The caregiver related to the police that one of the suspects took her to the lower flat of the house and tied her up in a chair.
She said she heard the elderly woman crying out for help while the men ransacked the house.
The woman said she was able to free herself after the two men left the house and she immediately rushed to her aunt’s room where she found her lifeless body in a pool of blood. She said she immediately raised an alarm.
The caregiver said a number of articles that belonged to the elderly woman were missing along with a bag with over $350,000 cash.
Crime Scene investigators said the elderly woman was stabbed multiple times to her body.
