Labourer found dead in Police lock-ups with multiple injuries moments after arrest

The Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility has launched a probe into the death of 32-year-old labourer, Kennard Douglas of Crane, West Coast Demerara.

Douglas was found dead in the lock-ups of the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station hours after he had been arrested on suspicion of being involved in a robbery that the Police claim took place three days prior. The details of that alleged robbery have not been released by the Police.

The Police claim that Douglas was held at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop on Saturday midday and escorted to the nearby Police Station. However, according to the Police, he became aggressive and resisted the Police ranks as he was being taken to the lock ups.

Less than 45 minutes after the 32-year-old was placed in the lock-ups, the Police said he was discovered frothing at the mouth.

According to a Police statement, he was reportedly rushed to the West Demerara Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

But family members are convinced that it is a case of murder. Relatives who visited the man at the hospital just after he was pronounced dead, said there were multiple visible marks of violence to his body. They believe he was badly beaten and thrown into the lock-ups.

One relative released a video recording of the man’s body with multiple visible marks of violence to the side of his abdomen and upper body.

The Police said the circumstances surrounding the man’s death are being probed.
