High Court orders removal of vendors and their structures from outside Demico House

High Court Judge, Navendra Singh, has ordered the removal of several vendors and their structures from outside the Demico House Hotel and Restaurant at Stabroek.

The Judge’s decision was handed down this morning and follows the Court action that was filed by Banks DIH Limited, which is the parent company for Demico House.

The action was filed by Attorney Reon Miller of the Boston and Boston Law firm on behalf of Banks DIH. The Town Clerk and the City Engineer were both named as respondents in the matter, but opted not to put up a defence.

The Judge has issued an order directing the two senior City Council officials to remove the vendors and their stands and structures and belongings from the pavement and surroundings outside the popular restaurant.

The company noted that it has been the occupant of the property since 1969 and over the past few years, the vending situation outside the business place has worsened with no attempt by the Council to address it. Banks DIH stated that the vending situation affected access to its business place which has resulted in severe financial loss.

The company said it made several requests over the years for the City Council to address the problem. It even made requests for the Police to intervene, but nothing was done.

With the Court order handed down, many of the vendors remained defiant today. They said they were served a notice to remove from the area with immediate effect, but they do not plan to move since they have no place to go. They are demanding a meeting of the Georgetown City Council with the hope of the Council finding an alternative location for them to transact their business.

There are more than 25 vendors who have built structures surrounding Demico House. The situation has been worsening with additional vendors coming out at night to transact late night business operations.

Earlier this year, Chairman of Banks DIH, Clifford Reis, told the company’s shareholders that action would have been taken to clear the vendors from outside the Demico House location, since the situation had become unbearable.
