Man in Suriname stabs 9 persons to death, including 5 children

The small nation of Suriname was thrown into shock early this morning after a man went berserk on the outskirts of Paramaribo and brutally stabbed nine persons to death, including four of his own children and another child.

Two other persons, including teenage child of the suspect, were rushed to the hospital with serious stab wounds and are clinging to life.

The Police said an elderly couple and members of another family who lived in the same area with the suspect, are among the other victims. The suspect was arrested at the scene after he was shot by responding officers, and has since been hospitalised.

Police in Paramaribo said they received an emergency call at around 12:23 this morning and found the bodies of the nine persons when they arrived at the scene. One child was stabbed more than 40 times, according to reports. The dead children are between the ages of 5 to 15-years-old.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, reportedly attempted to attack officers with a knife when they arrived at the scene, but the police responded by shooting him in the legs before taking him into custody.

Investigators in Suriname said the man had been struggling with psychiatric issues for some time, which had contributed to the breakdown of his marriage. His four children had been left in his care.

The President of Suriname, Jennifer Simons, has issued condolences to the affected families and the community and has committed the Government’s help in covering all funeral and other costs related to the tragedy.

A motive for the attack is unknown.
