A fisherman stabbed himself to death this morning, after attacking and stabbing a police officer just outside a city wharf.
The policeman has been admitted to a city hospital and is under intensive care.
According to reports, two police officers were at the Vieira wharf carrying out regular checks of the fishing vessels when noticed the man with what appeared to be marijuana and requested to search him.
He objected to the search and according to eyewitnesses, he grabbed one of the officers and placed the knife to his throat while the other officer reached for his weapon.
The officer attempted to fire warning shots but the weapon malfunctioned and the fisherman walked away from the area with the knife in his hand.
However, he was cornered by some other police officers a short distance away and attacked one of them with the knife, repeatedly stabbing the officer to the body.
As the other policemen rushed in, the suspect turned the knife on himself and stabbed himself to death while the injured officer laid with his wounds nearby.
Both were taken to the Georgetown Hospital where the fisherman was pronounced dead and the police officer was rushed into emergency surgery.
A full investigation has been launched.
