Finance Secretary within the Ministry of Finance Nirmal Rekha has abandoned his post, the government announced on Friday.
Rekha’s action comes at a time when the government is conducting a forensic audit at the Ministry and shortly after the installment of a new Minister and government in May.
According to State Minister Joe Harmon, Rekha had applied for leave shortly after the elections. His leave was approved but he has not reported for duty since it came to an end on July 31.
When asked how his absence will affect the ongoing audits, Harmon said the Finance Minister will be addressing that matter in due course.
In the interim, the Cabinet has appointment the Deputy Finance Secretary to act in the position.
Harmon said there were several attempts to contact Mr. Rekha but all were unsuccessful. He said from information received, he had returned to the Ministry twice since July 31st.
In a bid to stop any unauthorised spending, the new government just after the May 11 elections met with Rekha and other officials.
