23-year-old farmer, Shaheed Mohamed, was this afternoon charged for the murder of 7-year-old, Adriel Aftab Mohamed. He appeared at the Leonora Magistrates’ Court where the murder charge was read to him.
The murder accused was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.
The man was brought to the Court under heavy Police guard and taken away quickly just after his appearance, as family members of the murdered child gathered outside the Courthouse.
The accused appeared emotionless during his brief Court appearance. After the appearance, the mother of the murdered child was overcome with grief and gazed on as the man was whisked away from the Courthouse. She briefly told journalists that she remains in shock over the brutal murder of her son and continues to be overtaken by emotions.
The dead boy’s father said he can’t describe his feelings after seeing the man who took his son’s life appear in Court. He said the man has no heart and he will get his justice.
7-year-old Adriel Aftab was alone at home with his disabled great grandmother last Friday morning when they were both attacked inside their Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo home. The young boy was slashed across his neck and died on the spot. The great grandmother was stabbed to her neck, but survived the attack and was hospitalised.
A relative who lives nearby said she raised an alarm after hearing screams coming from the house, but by the time family members and others rushed over, the suspect had already escaped.
The suspect was arrested over the weekend after investigators were able to identify him based on CCTV video recording from nearby cameras.
He remains in remand until his next Court appearance.
