A 46-year-old North Essequibo man was today sentenced to 23 years in jail after being found guilty of the 2012 rape of 6-year-old boy.

The convict, Leonard Albert called ‘Lenny’ stood quietly before Justice Simone Ramall as the sentence was handed down.

Justice Ramlall told the convict that he will only become eligible for parole after serving 20 years behind bars.

Throughout the trial, Albert denied sexually assaulting the young child.

The child is now in his early teens and it was explained to the Court by a Probation Officer that the child remains withdrawn and is very distrustful of persons around him.

The Probation Officer also told the Court that there is another sexual assault matter against the convict that is currently being investigated. That matter also involves a young child.

In handing down the 23-year prison sentence, the Judge said the convict, who is also a father of five children, has shown no sign of remorse.

She also ordered that he be exposed to educational classes while in prison.
