GDF Coast Guard discovers 135 pounds of marijuana in boat after occupants flee

Ranks from the Guyana Defence Force’s Coast Guard Unit in Berbice, discovered 135 pounds of marijuana in a boat in the Berbice river on Tuesday.

In a statement today, the Guyana Police Force said the large amount of marijuana has since been handed over to the Police.

It was also reported that the GDF Coast Guard ranks were conducting patrol duties in the Berbice River when they observed a boat approaching, but it suddenly changed directions in an attempt to flee.

The patrol pursued the boat, which ran aground onto the shore.

Three identifiable occupants exited the boat and escaped from the scene as the Coast Guard arrived.

The boat was towed to the Coast Guard base, where the ranks observed ten (10) bulky parcels wrapped in black garbage bags and clear transparent plastic.

The suspects are still to be located.

The marijuana was taken to the Central Police Station in Berbice, marked and lodged. The boat and its engine are presently at the Coast Guard Base.
