The Government is currently reviewing the requirement and procedure for obtaining a gun license and is also making moves to lift the requirement for tint permits by introducing a standardized tint level for regular road users.
On the issue of the tint permits, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo today said the Home Affairs Minister has been inundated with requests for tint permits.
He stated that it is the Government intention to remove the requirement by introducing a standardized tint level, which will be higher than the current 35% level for regular road users. However, there will be a separate level for the Security Forces, and Diplomats, he said.
“Now, everyone wants an exemption. So…we may just have two levels, one for security forces and diplomats, and then another tint level, maybe a little higher than what exists now, and those are the two levels. There is no exemption, so you can’t run down a minister every day for exemption permit,” the Vice President said.
Under the current Laws and Regulations, applicants for tint permits are required to write a letter to the Minister of Home Affairs, requesting permission to use their vehicle with tint and attach supporting documents to the reasons for the application.
But Jagdeo said the Minister’s time could be better spent than addressing requests for tint permits.

On the issue of gun licenses, Jagdeo announced that the the Government is also looking at the system of issuing gun licenses with the intention of giving people the opportunity to protect themselves without flooding the streets with guns.
“The same thing for gun licenses, we are looking at a system that allow people some way of protecting themselves and families but at the same time don’t give out 50,000 guns that people have applied for. We have applications between 30 to 50,000 applications in, and that is a big source of dissatisfaction,” the Vice President said.
According to the Vice President, during the Government’s interaction with citizens, there were many complaints about applications lagging in the system.
Through the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Government issues gun licenses to various groups of people and entities, once all requirements are met.
However, there is still concern about the number of illegal weapons in the streets.
