Residents of Hopetown on the West Coast of Berbice set fire to a car late yesterday afternoon after it slammed into two residents of the community, resulting in their hospitalisations.

The residents said the driver of the car was speeding through the community when he lost control of the car and hit down two residents who were riding their electric bike to the side of the roadway.

The driver was reportedly beaten and his car torched before Police arrived on the scene. The driver is believed to be the son of a businessman from the West Coast Berbice area.

Police in the area moved in quickly to clear the roadway and restore order after the incident, as the residents became agitated over the injuries.

The driver of the car had to also seek medical attention.

A full police investigation is being conducted.
