Police call on Belladrum residents to stop “unlawful” protests

Hundreds of residents of Belladrum on the West Coast of Berbice came out in a fiery protest on Sunday against the ongoing detention of Returning Officer for Region 4, Clairmont Mingo who is from the community.

From early Sunday morning and into late last night, the residents set fires to tyres and debris as they blocked the main road through the community.

An old wooden house was fetched and placed in the middle of the road by the residents who have vowed that their protests will continue as long as Mingo remains in custody.

Many of the protesters expressed disgust at the way Mingo was being treated by the Police, being handcuffed and shackled and given limited time with his Attorneys.

The Guyana Police Force dispatched riot Police to the scene yesterday and they kept close eyes on the protesters.

In a statement on Sunday, the Police Force expressed grave concern over the protests which it said were unlawful.

The Force said the protests were a threat to public safety and the well being of innocent citizens, adding that the protests also denied the rights and freedoms of persons who have been prevented from using the main roadway through the village.

The Force complained that traffic was built up for more than a mile on both sides of the road at Belladrum and it also has concerns about the COVID-19 health regulations being breached.

The Police Force wants those persons engaging in the protests to desist as they continue to affect the normal lives of hundreds of persons.
