A-15-year old boy is in Police custody in Berbice and he is expected to face murder charges after he allegedly stabbed a taxi driver to death as the man taunted him.
The dead man has been identified as 37-year-old taxi driver, Deonarine Laljit. The name of his teenage assailant has not been released.
According to the Police, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at Line Path Road, Berbice. The 15-year-old was a passenger in the man’s taxi, when it is alleged, the taxi driver started to taunt the teen and make sarcastic remarks about the teen’s sister.
In response, the teenager, who was seated in the backseat of the car, whipped out a knife and repeatedly stabbed the taxi driver.
The man was able to stop the car and ran for help but collapsed a short distance away.
He was taken to the Skeldon hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The teenage suspect, who initially fled the scene, was eventually captured and taken into custody.
Persons in the community said the teenager was known to the taxi driver and the taxi driver would regularly taunt him about his sister whenever he saw him.
A probe is ongoing.
