Mazaruni miner arrested over attempted murder of colleague

A 53-year-old miner from Imbaimadai Landing in the Upper Mazaruni River area, has been taken into custody over the alleged attempted murder of another miner in the same area.

The victim has been identified as 44-year-old James Thomas. The Police have not released the name of the suspect.

However, according to the Police report, the two miners were consuming High Wine on Monday when they got into a row.

It was during that row that the Thomas picked up the bottle belonging to the other miner, but the other miner managed to get it back from him.

He then doused his drinking buddy, James Thomas, with the high wine and set him ablaze.

The flames quickly engulfed the miner but he managed to get it out, but suffered serious burns to his body. The Police said he was rushed to a Health outpost in the area and later transferred to the Georgetown Hospital, where he was admitted. The Police said he sustained second degree burns to his body.

The suspect has since been arrested, as the probe continues.
