The Guyana Police Force today said it is investigating the abduction of two Guyanese men allegedly by members of the Venezuelan “Syndicato” gang operating within the Eteringbang area in Region 7.
In a statement, the Police said at around 5pm on Monday, it contacted Dameon Williams, who is a Boat Builder and Captain of River’s View, Essequibo River.
He is the son of one of the abducted men, 66-year-old, Fredrick Pollard, who is a Boat Captain from Bartica.
The Police explained that Mr. Pollard operates a metal boat equipped with two 75hp outboard engines, and his son explained his father departed Devil Hole Landing on a fuel shuttling trip to Ekereku Backdam at around 5am last Thursday.
The man reported that on Sunday, he was contacted by his father who related that he was departing Ekereku Backdam to return to Devil Hole Landing with a porter onboard.
The man said since then he has not heard back from his father.
According to the police statement, the son reported that on Monday afternoon he received a phone call from an unknown person who informed him that his father had been forcibly abducted by a Venezuelan Syndicato gang, while traveling in the vicinity of Botanamu Creek.
The Police said in a separate but related investigation on Monday, ranks from Eteringbang contacted Boat Captain, Collin Mathews, who is based in Venezuela.
He told investigators that he was loading his boat on the Venezuelan shore when he heard gunshots.
The man said members of the Syndicato gang took him and his passengers into a creek and held them at gunpoint.
He said while there, he observed the abducted Fredrick Pollard and another man being held captive. He said he was relieved of a drum of fuel, before being sent away.
The Police said interviews were also conducted with nine other persons who were passengers in the boat and they confirmed the boat captain’s report.
Investigations into the abduction are still ongoing.
