Ramjattan calls for removal of “anti-national” Policia signage from Guyana Police vehicles

A move by the Guyana Police Force, to include the word “Policia”, the Spanish name for Police, on the Force’s vehicles is not finding favor with former Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan.

At a press conference today, the Opposition legislator lashed out at the GPF over the move, calling it ill-advised and abhorrent.

Ramjattan said the Spanish signage should be removed.

“That Policia thing is utter nonsense, it is abhorrent and it is my opinion that the Police ought to immediately repaint all the vehicles that have Policia with Police,” Mr. Ramjattan said.

Mr. Ramjattan said he was made aware that the decision to add the word “Policia” on the Police vehicles was an executive decision, but he contended that such a move was ill-advised.

The Guyana Police Force has defended the move, saying that its vehicles will have the word Police (in English) along with the GPF Logo and the word ‘Policia’ will be placed at the bottom of the English writing to cater for the growing number of Spanish speaking migrants.

But Mr. Ramjattan believes the move is a backward one.

“It could be easily remedied because Guyana is English speaking, and every inch or our territory, every blade of grass should have Guyana in English and on every institution, whether is regional, hospital, offices you must have the words in English and so I would like that to be made clear that it is an abhorrent thing and it is very anti-national,” Mr. Ramjattan noted.

Mr. Ramjattan said Guyanese should also stand up and put pressure on the Guyana Police Force to remove the markings.
