Sophia man seeks justice after shot by Police during arrest

A Sophia family is demanding justice after their son was shot to the leg by the Police during a confrontation.

The Police said 25-year-old, Quincy Morris was shot while resisting arrest. The Police claimed that he had pulled a gun on the arresting officers, resulting in one of the officers firing a shot which struck him in one of his legs.

However, Morris and his family said while he found himself arguing with the Policemen, he never pulled any weapon on them.

According to the 25-year-old, the Police visited his home following an assault complaint from his girlfriend. He said when the officers noticed that he owned a motorcycle, they told him that he should follow them to the station on his motorcycle. Morris said his motorcycle had nothing to do with the matter they were investigating and he told them that he would not be taking the bike to the station.

He said when one of the officers attempted to grab the keys to the motorcycle, he resisted and it was then that the officer whipped out his firearm and shot him to the leg.

“I end up get the shot and I fall on the ground in front of everybody, and I don’t know what happened after then because I get blackout”, Morris recalled.

He said he never had any weapon on him and therefore never pulled any gun on the officers. His girlfriend said when she visited the Police requesting their presence at the home, she wanted them to give him a warning after he reportedly pushed her during an argument. She said he had no weapon and was no threat to the Police officers.

The man’s family say they want justice since they believe the Guyana Police Force may be attempting to cover up the issue.

Morris said since he was shot, he has not been hearing much from the Guyana Police Force and its investigations into the incident.
