The Timehri man who dug his way onto to the tarmac of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and broke into a private jet, carting off several bottles of liquor and other items appeared in Court today and pleaded guilty.

The man, Albert Rajram aka “Bunny” appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court to face two counts of simple larceny.

The Court was told that between the 26th and 28th October, he broke into the private jet and stole a quantity of electronic gadgets, alcohol and other items valued at $2.1 million.

Rajram admitted to the offense and was sentenced to three years in jail on each of the two charges. The sentences will run concurrently.

The convict who told investigators that he was unemployed was arrested last weekend by the Police during their investigation of the break-in of the aircraft. A number of the stolen items were recovered from his home.

The private jet landed in Guyana last Wednesday and was parked close to the hangar of the GDF Aircorps.

When the pilots returned to the airport two days later to prepare for their flight out, they noticed that the door had been breached. Further checks revealed a number of items were stolen.

The issue has raised serious questions about security and safety at the airport. Some officials in the aviation sector believe the man should have faced more serious charges for tampering with an aircraft.
