Two and half years in jail for American youth nabbed with marijuana in cereal boxes at Airport

A 23-year-old American man who was nabbed at the Cheddi Jagan Airport back in April with more than 270 grams of marijuana stashed in cereal boxes in his suitcase, changed his not guilty plea to guilty today.

The youth, Malcolm Vinson appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scare at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court today for the continuation of his trial. However, during his appearance, he informed the Court of his decision to change his plea and enter a guilty plea.

With the guilty plea recorded, the Magistrate sentenced the 23-year-old to 2 years and 6 months in jail. He was also fined $246,600.

Vinson had just arrived in Guyana for a visit when the marijuana was discovered during security checks of his suitcases.

The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit has been stepping up its campaign across the country to weed out the drug trade. There have been a number of recorded drug busts for this year already.
