Two brothers who are members of the Guyana Police Force found themselves facing a Magistrate this morning to answer to assault charges.
The two policemen, 24-year-old Daniel Bernard and 26-year-old Isaiah Bernard were charged with the abduction of Ashkay Budram with intent to wound.
They were also slapped with a charge of malicious wounding of the same young man.
The two policemen reportedly suspected the Budram of breaking into their home and making off with several items.
The charges allege that they took it upon themselves in their private capacity to abduct the young man take him back to the scene of the crime, where it is alleged that he was badly beaten and burnt as they questioned him about the burglary.
Following a report of the incident, the Guyana Police Force moved swiftly to interdict both men from their jobs.
During their appearance today at the Leonora Magistrates’ Court, the two policemen pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate placed them on $400,000 bail each and ordered that they return to Court at the end of January for the continuation of the case.
The assault on the teenager has received widespread condemnation, including from the hierarchy of the Guyana Police Force.
Earlier this week, the Police Commissioner called a media conference to address the issue and made it clear that the Court has zero-tolerance for such incidents.
