Volda Lawrence granted bail in private charge filed by Charles Ramson

Chairman of the People’s National Congress Reform, Volda Lawrence appeared in Court this morning to answer a charge of allegedly procuring the Returning Officer for Region Four, Clairmont Mingo to utter false results to the Chief Elections Officer.

The charge was filed by PPP Member Charles Ramson Jr. back in March. He also filed a similar fraud charge against the Returning Officer.

In Court today, Attorney Glen Hannoman presented himself as the Attorney for Charles Ramson Jr. and told the Court that the Director of Public Prosecutions would be taking over the matter.

Lawrence’s Attorney, Nigel Hughes, said he found it strange that Hannoman would make such a declaration when the matter was filed since back in March and the DPP never got involved in it.

Mr. Hughes told the Court that it is clear the former Health Minister is no flight risk and turned up in Court voluntarily since she has never been served with a summons.

After listening to statements by the two Attorneys, the Chief Magistrate set bail in the sum of $100,000.

Outside the Courthouse, scores of supporters gathered.

Ms. Lawrence said the charge filed against her is fictitious and is nothing more than an attempt by the PPP to embarrass members of the former government. She said in the many years she served as an electoral agent, she has never been accused of any wrong doing.

The matter will come up again in Court in a few week’s time. It is likely that the DPP’s office will review the charge.
