Twelve teenage inmates escaped from the Juvenile Detention Centre in Sophia early this morning after attacking the two Police guards who were on duty.
Five of the teens have so far been recaptured.
News Source understands that the breakout occurred just after midnight. A small group of teens who were housed in cell #2 were able to make their way out of that facility and hid in an area closeby.
When some of the other teen inmates called out to the Police, the officers were attacked by those who were hiding as they made his way to the area to respond to the call.
The unarmed police officers were relieved of the keys to some of the other cells and the juveniles bolted from the facility.
An alarm was raised just after the escape and searches in some of the nearby communities resulted in five of the juveniles being recaptured and taken back into custody.
Some of those who escaped were awaiting trial in juvenile court for various crimes including murder and robbery.
Security has been reinforced at the facility and a full investigation has been launched. The Ministry of Public Security and the Guyana Police Force have direct responsibility for the Juvenile Detention Centre.
