The Government has set aside a total of $150 million to be utilized for the completion of Durban Park in time for Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations next month.
The project which was being solely executed and funded by private interest is now being mobilized by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure under the supervision of subject Minister David Patterson.
The Minister held a press conference on Thursday and clarified that the construction of the site remains a public/private partnership.
At least four contractors will continue to execute works at Durban Park, throughout the day and night, for a May 15 deadline.
Patterson said all the materials have been donated but could not put a figure to the donations.
He said an inventory is being done and information on the total cost of the site will be available at a later date. He explained that the $150 million will be enough to fund the remainder of works to be carried out.
There were issues raised regarding the safety and standard of works being done at the site, but Patterson claimed that all those issues have been addressed.
Chief Works Officer Geoffrey Vaughn accompanied the Minister on a tour of the site on Thursday and indicated that among the works to be completed were finishing touches and remedial works to the stands, bleachers and tarmac.
He said there was also electrical, drainage and sanitary facilities to be put in place.
A total of 27 stands are being constructed at Durban Park with each stand estimated to accommodate 700 persons.
The media also joined the Minister and his team for a tour of the site where works were ongoing. Patterson stressed that there was no breakage in the level of cooperation that existed before.
He could not say who were the contractors that will be working to complete the project but says it will certainly be contractors who have the ability and manpower to complete the works on schedule.
