A 16-year-old student of the Central Corentyne Secondary School lost her life tragically on Friday evening in a mini-bus accident along the #63 Beach public road in Corentyne, Berbice.
The child, Jodea Seline, was among a group of students returning home from the Inter-Schools Athletics Championship in Berbice when the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle, resulting in it toppling several times before eventually coming to a stop.
A number of the students and teachers were thrown onto the roadway, while others had to be pulled out of the mangled wreckage.
The young girl was pronounced dead at the hospital, while a number of other students have been admitted to the hospital with various injuries.
Education Minister, Sonia Parag, has offered condolences to the family of the dead student while wishing the injured students a speedy recovery.
“We extend deepest condolences to her family and relatives and pray that they find strength at this very sad time. The Ministry of Education and the Government continue to engage the Doctors and staff of the No. 75 Hospital, as they care for and monitor the other students and teachers involved in the accident”, she said.
The administration of the Central Corentyne Secondary School also issued a statement, indicating that “our hearts are heavy as we mourn this tremendous loss. Jodea was a bright and cherished individual of our school family, and her absence will be deeply felt by her classmates, teachers, and all who knew her. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. May her soul rest in peace, and may those who mourn her find strength and comfort. We will miss you deeply”.
