19-year old suspected gang member gunned down

A 19-year-old man believed to the member of a criminal gang that operates along the East Bank of Demerara was gunned down in an execution type killing on Sunday evening.

Dead is Ryan Sooklall who lived in Providence on the East Bank of Demerara. He was shot dead by a lone gunman just after 9 o’ clock on Sunday night. Police investigators believe the killing may be linked to an attack in another East Bank community that Sooklall may have been involved in earlier in the day.

Investigators said earlier in the day, there was an attack on a house in the Bagotstown community. Several shots were fired at the house and the occupants reported to the police that the 19-year-old was behind the attack.

According to police sources, Sooklall was well-known to law enforcement officials on the East Bank of Demerara since he had several brushes with the laws and was believed to be a leading member of a criminal gang that carried out a number of robberies in various East Bank villages.

Investigations into the latest murder are ongoing.
