$210M Boiler system commissioned at GPHC

The Georgetown Public Hospital has commissioned a $210 Million Boiler system that is intended to enhance operational efficiency and patient care at the country’s primary health institution.

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank  Anthony, while applauding the hospital on its latest acquisition, underscored the importance the Boiler System plays in the area of sterilization.

“Having steam in the hospital for sterilization is a very important thing, and if that is not working effectively then it can create problems for us in terms of infection control, and so I am very happy that we have been able to resolve this,” the Health Minister said.

GPHC’s Chief Executive officer, Robbie Rambarran said the Boiler System will help the hospital to better sterilize materials including linens, and equipment used by the hospital.

“Most importantly, we need steam in the Central Sterilization Unit for sterilizing of instrument that we use for surgeries and even preparation of gauze that we use for dressings of wounds, etc,” he explained.

He told reporters that the existing boilers were in a deplorable state, and it was important for them to be replaced.

“We have three boilers. These boilers were in a very deplorable state. In 2021 when I came back to the hospital I realized that there was little to no maintenance done on these boilers. So, they have deteriorated and also because they had deteriorated, the quantity and quality of steam that they were producing, had affected many things including sterilizer. We had to replace a sterilizer last year, and we are replacing another one this year, and it is as a consequence of some of the challenges we have here,” the CEO explained.

He said due to the state of the boilers, the water purification system at the hospital was also severely affected, resulting in it becoming dysfunctional.

“They disconnected the entire system, so untreated water was going into boiler, which compromised the quality and the quantity of steam,” he explained.

Rambarran said since 2021, the hospital has made significant investments to improve the operations of the hospital and the quality of services it offers.
