Thirty-one Officer Cadets have completed the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Standard Officers Course 56, and will this week receive their Instrument of Commission from President Irfaan Ali, officially making them Officers of the GDF.
The Officer Cadets include six members from the Guyana Police Force, four from the Belize Defence Force, and the remainder from the Guyana Defence Force.
At a Commissioning Church Service this morning, Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan said it was a proud moment for the GDF and the officers.
As part of Course 56, the Officer Cadets underwent extensive military and humanitarian training, and they will also graduate from the University of Guyana with an Associate Degree.
The Chief of Defence Staff, while dodging questions on the number of soldiers and officers that have enlisted with the Force within the last five years, said the GDF has been receiving “healthy applications”
“Over the years, the Guyana Defence Force has been attracting non-commissioned ranks and the commissioned ranks, and we have been having some healthy applications. Of course, we have rigid requirements, not only your academics but also your health, and other categories of assessments that we do. There are almost three months of assessments that we do. We do vetting, we do physical assessment, we do health assessment, and most recently we added another part that focuses on psychoanalysis,” Brigadier Khan said.

Further, he said the GDF is a great place to start one’s career.
“Anyone who who wants to start their career this is the best place to do it, and then you can branch off, you can do journalism, you can engineer, piloting, marine study,” he said.
The Chief of Defence Staff said the Force will continue to produce officers of caliber with a high level of integrity and professionalism.
