A 51-year-old man from Uitvlugt on the West Coast of Demerara lost his life early this morning when he was hit down by a mini-bus while standing on the side of the roadway.
The dead man has been identified as Nicholas Khelawon.
The accident occured just after 3 o’clock this morning along the Public Road at Uitvlugt.
A Police report stated that the mini-bus was being driven at a fast rate at the time of the deadly accident. The 29-year-old driver of the mini-bus told investigators that he was forced to swerve after a car being driven in front of him made a sudden u-turn along the road.
The driver claimed that in swerving his mini-bus to avoid hitting the car, he slammed into the pedestrian who was at the side of the roadway. The mini-bus ended up through a fence and into a yard.
The pedestrian was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Leonora Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the mini-bus sustained injuries, but was treated and sent away. He has since been taking into Police custody and is assisting with the investigations. There were five other persons in the mini-bus. They all sustained injuries and were kept overnight in the hospital for monitoring.
Investigations into the deadly accident are ongoing.
