Hundreds of commuters were stranded on Friday night as the Berbice River bridge encountered several electrical problems that affected its ability to close after being opened for an ocean going vessel.
Speed boats and a passenger barge were brought in to service to assist those left stranded.
In a statement, the Transport and Harbours Department said technicians from the bridge along with assistance from Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) and Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco) were working to resolve the difficulty.
“The Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) passenger barge, the Bonasika has been mobilised to assist in moving commuters between New Amsterdam and Rosignol at the T & HD facilities there. Additional vessels will be brought into service by Saturday morning.”
The Public Works Ministry is hoping that the entire problem would have been resolved by Saturday.
