Abducted sales clerk released; relative in custody

The Bhena’s Store sales clerk who was abducted on his way to work on Monday morning has been released.

The 28-year-old man Xanier Waaldijk, was released by his abductors just after 5 o’clock on Monday afternoon and made his way to the Criminal Investigations Department of the Guyana Police Force where he was questioned about his ordeal.

A cousin of the young man has been taken into custody in connection with the abduction. According to reports, the cousin is believed to have set up the abduction after a quantity of gold went missing from the family’s Grove house.

The cousin has been accusing the young man of removing the gold from the house, and although he repeatedly denied even having knowledge of it, the accusations continued over the weekend.

Waaldijk was on his way to work in the company of a co-worker on Monday morning when a car drove up alongside him, and he was bundled into the car by two men after he confirmed his identity.

News Source understands that he was taken to two houses on the West Coast of Demerara where he was repeatedly questioned about the missing gold and was also hit to the head.

Reports state that after the abductors found out that the young man’s cousin had been arrested, they drove him across the bridge and told him that he was free to go.

Relatives say they are relieved that he was released unharmed and they will ensure justice is served in the matter.
